structured literacy services HAwkes Bay
We are team of primary trained teachers, passionate about delivering Structured Literacy intervention for children who need it most.
We are a Hawkes Bay based tuition company that understands young people are unique, and that their learning styles can be, too. We cater to a wide range of children with learning differences, including those with Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) such as dyslexia. Our goal is to ensure that no matter how your child sees the world, they can achieve great things in learning and in life.
Questions & Answers
Why Should I Choose Structured Literacy And Not Another Programme/Intervention?
There are many programmes or interventions that will promise a quick fix for your child, but the reality is they may cause more harm than good. When you are investing in your child's education, you want to make the best decision for them. The science is very clear about what neurodiverse and dyslexic children need – it is evidenced-based literacy instruction. An evidence-based approach follows the scientific evidence; it relies on scientific evidence for guidance and decision-making.
This is what we offer – an evidence-based Structured Literacy approach that will give your child the best chance of becoming a successful reader, writer and speller. What assessments will we do?
During your child’s first session we will undertake a range of tests with them, including spelling, reading and phonological awareness. We use the results from this testing to design an individual teaching plan to meet your child’s specific needs.
We will contact you after these initial assessments to share our findings and what our plan is moving forward.
We are not able to do diagnostic or educational psychologist assessments, however, we are always happy to provide you with a list of external providers you can contact for a full diagnostic assessment. What Is The Cost? (And Why)
We charge $90 per lesson and our sessions are one hour long. This fee covers not just the session itself, but all the tutor's planning time, and our team's behind the scenes work to ensure we provide your family with the best service we possibly can, ongoing professional development and the purchases of new resources. We charge $10 each term for materials (e.g. folders, workbooks and printable materials) Additional costs may be incurred to correspond with the school as agreed with parents. What do we teach in a lesson?
Within each 60 minute lesson we teach phonological awareness, followed by the explicit, systematic and sequential teaching of the alphabetic code, spelling, reading and writing. We use decodable texts and a range of specially designed resources.
Our lessons are fun, engaging, hands on, and specifically planned for each individual's needs. We want our students to love coming for tutoring, and to always feel successful, confident and capable.I’ve Been Told All Children Learn At Different Rates – When Should I Be Concerned
We do not recommend a wait to fail approach. Intervention is the most effective when children are younger.
We recommend schools start Structured Literacy as soon as children begin school.
If you have concerns about your child’s literacy please feel free to discuss this with us.Who Do We Work With?
We work with children who are having trouble learning to read, write and spell. While many of our students have diagnosed specific learning disabilities such as dyslexia, many others simply need a bit of a boost so they can meet the demands of the classroom. Please feel free to contact us if you are unsure what type of support your child might need, as we are more than happy to guide you through this tricky process. How Can You Support Learning At Home?
The new learning your child focuses on in session with their tutor is strengthened through the support you give them during the week with their homework - it truly is a team effort. This should take around 10-15 minutes a day, and ideally be completed five times each week. Repetition is key to your child’s success, and homework activities are designed so your child can review and practise their new skills. The more the practice, the more confident they will feel.Where And When Do We Tutor?
Our lessons are done between the hours of 8.30-3. This is because students are exhausted after a day of school and we find they are able to best learn and retain learning within these hours. Lessons take place from our home offices in Havelock North, or if your child is at Havelock North Primary, we may be able to offer lessons at school. As our lessons take place during school hours, we ask that parents/caregivers gain permission from their school to bring their children to us at our offices for these lessons.
